Hello :)

Hello,

Hey mom and dad, Ya riots are crazy in Joburg, that's not the only one in the mines, there is a recent convert we see on weekends and there is a really bad riot going on at his school. He was in class last week and some guy walked in the glass room while the teacher was talking and just yelled at everyone, "don't you know today is independence day!" then he told them that he was going to give them 5 minutes to get out of the school before the riot came. Students went on strike I guess for some stupid reason and they just came into the school by the hundreds with clubs and bats and everything just destroying everything in there way including people. The kid broke his hand trying to get away from the riots and had to jump out of the 2nd story window. The riot is still going on. Its so crazy. You mainly just hear about that stuff going on around Joburg though. People are just riot crazy, the reason why they do it is because eventually the government gives in and just gives the people what they want. This country has some issues, hopefully things get a bit better in the coming years.

With sister Masters, I talked to her on Saturday and she said she would be so grateful to stay just for 2-3 nights. Not to long, just until she can find a guest house or something in Salt Lake. Everything is worked out well... the missionary she is seeing, he has known that she is going to be coming for along time. So everything should be good. She told me to say thank you very much to you guys for offering. And its fine if she stays in my room, I don't mind. She is scheduling her flight today. I printed out the info you gave me and gave it to her, so hopefully we can get on the same flight. We should be able to, so there is the scoop on that.

I will try to call Nelson, I think I should be able to understand him pretty well. Hope everything is okay with him. Last I heard from the branch president in Nelspruit he said that he was not doing to well and moved back that side, not sure why he would do that but I will give him a call. Hope it will work and not suck our airtime. But love you guys a lot, that's sweet about Nicki. Hear from you guys soon.

Love Justin

It snowed!! First time since 1981

Hey mom and dad!

Good to hear from you guys, yes it snowed!! It was pretty sweet!  The last time Africa had snow like that was in 1981, how do I know that? It’s because like every single person was telling us that’s when it snowed last. It was really quite crazy. It was not really like the snow we get back home though and it did not stick for some reason. When it started snowing I made my companion put in Christmas music…it was pretty legit. Almost felt like home...not really.

Sorry for not sending pictures for so long, I really have not been taking too many but I’ll send the ones that I have. I’ll try to take some in the location. They kind of encourage us not to because they don’t want people to think we are like tourists, plus if they see we have a camera they will probably want to claim that as well. I’m starting to get a bit tired of being white. Man, so many people think we have like thousands and millions of dollars all the time! Everyone is always asking to give them money for bread...yea right. Yesterday some kids we walked by told me to give them 1 rand, which is like nothing anyways, they just say that to see if you will actually give them. So when they asked me I just like snapped and yelled and asked them why they would think I would have money…I just kept saying that to them and they had no idea what to say. It’s just getting a bit annoying but it’s cool. I’ll get over it. Some things I will really miss about Africa but there are also those things that I will not miss at all.

That’s weird that so many people are getting married. I guess that’s just life though. I also missed Kolby’s wedding. I’m sure you guys remember my friend Kolby Sorenson. He got married… not sure if you guys knew.  I got the wedding invitation a couple weeks ago. That’s also really cool that a bunch of the grandkids and going to freedom, ha-ha that’s kind of funny.  I guess that will be kind of nice. It’s good to hear from you guys though thank you mother for reminding me of how many days I have left and when I’m giving my homecoming talk…ha-ha I think you’re trying to kill me for good. Just kidding… its crazy to think that time is coming fairly soon. It still feels like I have another year to go on mission. I feel like that time is never going to come. I think it will finally hit me when I get off the airplane in salt lake. But love you guys a lot, hope you get feeling better dad. Ill pray for you… don’t worry. Love you both! I look forward to hearing from you next week!

 Love, Justin

We have a few more baptisms coming up

Hello mom and dad,

The key board I’m typing on sucks really bad so this is going to be a short email.  Thanks for the pictures you guys sent they were awesome. Being a zone leader is not really too much different than what I was doing before, just besides your over more people I guess.  We go on exchanges a lot; it’s nice because I get to see lots of different areas. Are zone is really spread out; it takes about 2 hours to get to some of the elders. We have 14 elders in our zone, so it’s not too big of a zone. We are teaching a lot of good people. The only problem is you get ditched a lot here in township. People are always forgetting our appointment which is pretty annoying. Yesterday we had 7 appointments and 2 kept. We were pretty bumped. I wish people would realize that we have lives as well and that when they ditch it leaves a nice whole in our day. But we are teaching some great people, the next investigators we are planning on baptizing in August is a girl named Anthia, she has actually been coming to church for about 17 years...long time. Missionaries have just thought that she was a member, but she came to us and told us she is now ready to be baptized. She is like 23 I think, she is very smart, so we have been teaching her all the lessons and commandments. She is crazy though, she is a colored, I realize that might sound bad but when you talk about colored people here that means a white person and a black person had a baby, so they are called colored. She is our main one this month, there is also another girl who is 15 who is also really cool. Her date is in October though so it’s after I leave...weird. Man it feels like the Lord my whole mission wants me to teach woman. I don’t know why, but it just seems like some of the most powerful people I have taught on my mission have been woman. I guess he just knows I’m good with them J Ha-ha.  Today was cool as well… we went to the lion park and I got to pet a cheetah, that was sweet.  We also found a place to place golf for 30 rand, which is like basically free for clubs and everything. And guess what? I won! It was pretty cool I went there thinking I would play awful but I actually did alright. I got a 48 on 9 holes, and it was fun so I think we are going to try and go every week.  I can challenge dad to a game when I get back so watch out!  I’m sorry, I feel moms pain as I’m typing on this retarded key board… Its super annoying so I’m going to have to say good bye before I lose my mind. Love you guys!

Happy 21st Birthday Justin :)

Hey mom and dad,

Mom I don't suggest you try typing on dad’s iPad ever again. The only thing I got out of it was that dad was trying to set me up with someone and that you were saying happy birthday. I think I could feel your anger threw the email of how much you hated typing on it. But it’s good to hear from you guys. You did not update me on your trip though. Besides that you were watching the Olympics. I hope that’s not all you guys have done.....we were at a member’s home yesterday for a dinner appointment and he was watching the highlights so that was kind of cool I guess. I’ve never really been too into the Olympics but I enjoyed watching for a little bit.

Yes, tribes here are a bit crazy, things now are not as bad but it’s still not good. I think that time you were talking about must have been people from Zimbabwe. The people here treated them very bad. Kagiso is not too bad but there is a place called Bramfischer somewhat close to us that a cop told us is the most dangerous place. Apparently those tribal killings still happen there. It’s very stupid. I don’t understand still.

The week has been going well though… we had 2 baptisms yesterday which were very sweet. I did not count them as mine though because I have only taught them like a few times. But man there sweet people, one is Winnie who is in her 40's, and the other is a kid named joseph who is 19 I think. So that was nice. Thanks for the email though hope you guys enjoy the rest of your trip. Love you guys! Take care.

Sounds like things are busy at home...

Hey mom and dad

So, I like triple checked and for some reason I did not get the email mom sent, I’m not sure why. But I read both when you sent them too me and it was good to hear from you guys.  I tried to get the address of where we stay, its Wentworth Park in Mogale city I think.  Just so you know we do not stay in our area though, we stay in a different area. Missionaries are not allowed to live in the township, so we drive like 15 min to get to the area everyday… not too bad.  Hopefully you will be able to find it. Ya Kagiso is pretty barren, in township all of the homes are very compacted, we also have a lot of squatter camps in our area. I’m not sure if you know what those are but you can Google them if you want. There just little settlements of shacks and things like that. We usually do not go there though unless we get a referral from there.

It’s all good about my car I’m not too worried, the lord will provide. It sounds like mom has been having a lot of fun lately. Man… when are you done with all these camps and things? I feel like you’re going to a different camp every week. Sure you guys will have fun at Disneyland make sure to send some pictures, especially the goosing ones. That story you told about the guy in Colorado was terrible, that made me kind of depressed. Jeez how could someone do that, it sounds like something that would happen here.

Well everything is going pretty well in the area, we stay busy a lot going to different areas in the zone and going on exchanges and things plus keeping our area in shape. Just last week they were having riots over stupid electricity. People here just riot over anything and everything it’s so dumb. They get free homes, free land, and free electricity then when the government has an overload of electricity they take turns shutting down electricity and people just start burning things.  Just a little while ago the post people went on strike and burned a bunch of the post, probably a lot of missionary post as well. People don’t think here, it’s like if they don’t get what they want they just start burning everything then the government gives them what want then they stop, and things never get better. It’s pretty annoying just to see how disorganized everything is. But it’s all good… one day everything will get better, but I guess first it has to get worse.

To be honest with you mom I have not been too good with writing in my journal. I used to be really good but it’s kind of gone downhill a bit. But I’ll try to do better. I think the last time I wrote in it was a month ago or so. I know that’s not good. I’m just so tired every night we get home. Seems like the last thing I want to do is write how the day went, but hopefully do a bit better. Thanks for the money; I have no idea what I’ll buy. But thank you. I have actually forgotten my birthday is soon. I have not even told anyone and probably won’t tell anyone, birthdays on the mission are not a very big deal. Just another day, but thanks for the present.

Well I hope you guys have a fun time, I know you will. Thanks for giving me the updates mom on all the movies, and what characters I look like. I’m excited to watch all the good ones I missed when I get back. But love you guys have a fun time!

I'm in a new area...

Hey dad,

I did not get an email from mom...hope everything is okay, is she still in Vegas? Hopefully she is not partying too hard. Yes I will hopefully remember to get our address of where we stay. But I’m now serving in the township of Soweto and over the Soweto West Zone. We serve in the small township of Kagiso. It’s a really nice area (for missionary work) As far as areas go, it’s by far my most ghetto area on my mission....by far! But its sweet I should learn a lot, we teach almost all day every day, so that’s nice and the ward is also really cool. My companion is Elder Neilson from Delta Utah. I’m not sure where that is but I know it’s probably not on a map. He is a cool guy though we get along good, he is really obedient and a hard worker so you can’t ask for much more. Especially the last few months on the mission, it’s good to get a companion that works hard, so I don’t die too hard or at all.

Man that sucks about my car...what the heck, it sounded like all was good last week, that’s too bad. Oh well… I guess everything happens for a reason. I guess I’ll just get like a Lamborghini or something… that should do J nothing to fancy, just something to get me back and forth to school. I’ve learned how to drive stick now so that opens a few more windows, or maybe not…I don’t know. But, may my car rest in peace.

That’s cool you guys are going to Disney land, should be fun.  I remember the last time we went, for like thanksgiving break or something along time ago. It was pretty cool. So go safely. But tell mom I say hello and that I love her along with everyone else, take care dad.

Love, Justin

They are closing down our area :(

Hey Mom and Dad
Man it’s been a bit crazy lately. They are actually closing down our area, in Ransburg and Sandton. I’m being made a zone leader now for my last 3 months, and my companion is actually going home due to some family things back home. Maybe he will stop by and say hello to you guys. So yeah, we are both leaving the area and now the zone leaders here will take over our area and it will no longer be a working area. They will only teach people on a referral base and the people we are currently seeing. So it’s been a bit of a stressful weekend, just realizing all of these things. Later today I’m going with one of the assistants to bring Elder Cushing to the airport. Everything is happening pretty fast.

It sounds like everything is going well back home though. And I have already gotten you guys some things from Africa. So you don’t need to worry mom. I’ve been collecting things my whole mission for you guys, so you will have a few things from Africa when I get back. They’re not big but they’re from Africa. I also got some little things for the grandkids. The reason I had to use the card is because I had to buy some new pants. I was at the mission home and the President came up to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and very politely said, “Elder Brey, do you have any pants that are not faded?” The pants that I was wearing at the time were like green from the sun. Ha-ha so hence I had to go buy some new pants, now I have 2 pairs. Hopefully they should last the rest of my mission. But I guess I will be going to my last area on Tuesday, kind of a strange feeling. I will be able to update you guys next week on my area and companion and everything. It’s crazy to hear about all the fires going on, hopefully it settles down soon. It’s actually been very warm here as well, at least for winter. It’s supposed to be much colder than it has been. But I think it’s a blessing. It was way too cold last winter. But love you guys a lot talk to you next week.

Happy 4th of July!

Hey mom and dad,

I think my favorite part of your guy’s letters is when mom asked me if they celebrate the 4th of July in Africa...hahah I died. Sorry but it was pretty funny, no they do not celebrate American independence here in South Africa, I don't know why…it’s very strange, I mean we celebrate all of their national holidays why would they not celebrate ours. It’s quite rude actually. I’ll have to write Jacob Zuma a letter. Anyway the week was good. Our stats are a bit low but were still flying. We have a good time together. I got to play tennis on Saturday with a member’s grand kid, Tyran, who is not a member. That was super fun; I don’t think I have played for over 3 years or more, so that was really nice. He pretty much killed me in both sets but I pulled 5 games for myself. I’m in pain though; I was working muscles I have not worked for a long time. My back and forearms kill.

Also at church I was able to see another family I was seeing in Nelspruit! Man I’m getting lucky. Her name is Sister Jennifer, and her 2 daughters came, they were just visiting some family in Joburg, and went to the temple, and she just randomly decided to come to the Sandton ward, she had no idea I was serving here, it was so cool we talked for a long time. I sent a picture of her along time ago, where we are like standing on some steps and there is like a really pretty sunset in the background and she is holding a picture of her family. She is awesome.

I hope all goes well this week with you everyone though. Tell grandma I say hello. I’ve been praying for her. That’s too bad about all the fires as well. It never really seems like we have had that many problems with fires in the past. But love you guys and take care. Talk to you all next week.

Justin

I got to see one of my families go to the Temple...

Hey mom and dad,
Man… it’s funny, me and my companion where just talking about that letter they send to you guys, it’s called a "trunky" email. We were just joking about that it would be coming today, and boom! There it was… we thought that was pretty funny.  When I said my dying area… I was not referring that the area was going to be dead, that’s just what they call missionaries when they’re going home, there dying. And the last area you’re in before you go home is your "dying area" wherever you are. But who knows maybe I will be sent to an actual dying area.

Everything has been fine though, I’ve been really good the past few weeks so I don’t know. Maybe I was just tired. It feels like I just keep getting more tired and more tired as days go by like I’m just never catching up on sleep. I swear when I get home I’m just going to eat a lot of food then go into hibernation for like 2 weeks.  But everything has been great, me and my companion get along great the area is still hard but we keep trying, we got a referral last week for a white father led family...that might have sounded racist but that's like amazing, you never get white family referrals so that was pretty cool.

Sorry to hear about grandma, it does not sound like she is doing too well; I wonder if she even still remembers who I am. It would be nice to see her one last time but I don’t know, I guess we will see what happens. I’ll keep her in my prayers.

Something really sweet happened though this week, I had one of the best days of my mission on Saturday. I got to see the McCarthy family get sealed together in the Johannesburg Temple. I don't know if you guys remember but I was able to teach the father of that family who had been taught for years and when I was in Nelspruit he got baptized and we taught their family a lot and got really close to them. Barney’s brother is Frik (the South African Rambo) I’m sure you remember him, I was not able to see Frik though because he was having surgery, or else he also would have been able to receive his endowments. Man it was an awesome experience to see them go through the temple. Then in the sealing room I was able to stand in proxy of one of their sons that had passed. It was so cool I’ll never forget it. So it was a really good week.

Mom, it sounds like camp was fun, if there are any pictures of that I would really love to see them. Yes I think it would just be better to put money in my account for my birthday and it would be cheaper. Packages are too expensive, plus I’ll be home in a little while anyway so it does not really matter. You could even just wait tell I get home if you guys want.  Just do whatever works for you guys.  Love you all talk to you guys next week. Take care.

I had a super experience this week...

Hey mom and dad,

Thanks for the pictures; they were awesome, ha-ha…all the guys in the picture looked kind of mad J I thought that was funny. That’s so cool dad that you were able to go to the US open! Sounds like you had an awesome time. Oh and also to dad Happy Father’s day! Hope it was a good one, to be honest I forgot until yesterday that it was father’s day. But it sounds like it was awesome. Not to many guys get to go to the U.S. Open for father’s day.  I liked the pictures of mom getting dunked as well… that was awesome. Geez 2000 bucks is a lot, pretty cool your young women’s was able to raise that much money. I hope you have fun at girl’s camp. I’ll keep you in my prayers mom…I hope you will not get injured too bad.

Our week has been good though, as far as upcoming baptisms I’m not even sure I’ll get any baptisms in this area.  We have one girl Isabelle who is progressing really well but she was not able to come to church because of transportation issues, but she found a ride the other day so she will probably get baptized in July or August and I have a feeling I will be leaving this transfer which is the beginning of July. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have a 3 month dying area, which would mean I would have to leave here in a couple of weeks. I’m not sure though, you’re never sure anything can happen. Work with less actives is still going awesome. This week we met with a less active named Willy… we go to his house about once a week. This time we watched the restoration video with him and his 9 year old son (who is not a member) he is the only member, and as we were watching it his son just started to cry, and we had like no idea what was going on. When the movie was over he left to wipe away his tears and he came back acting really strange, remember this kid is 9 years old. And so we asked him why he was crying, he then told us he was touched by the movie, he said the part when the light came to Joseph Smith to tell him the truth he felt something inside of him. Man it was so awesome, what 9 year old kid says that? It was super spiritual and I’ll never forget it. We asked him if he would like to be baptized and he said yes. But the only problem is his father who just does not come to church for whatever reason. It’s frustrating.

But I hope you guys have a good week, try and take some pictures of camp for me mom and I’ll talk to you guys next week!

 Love, Justin

Things have been a bit slow, but still great

Hey mom and dad,
Good to hear from you guys. Man I’m super jealous of you dad, that's going to be sweet, you got to let me know how everything goes. I also tried to call that number you gave me for Nelson and it did not work… I’m not sure what’s wrong. You guys should try calling him once to see if it works, I’m sure he was just calling to say thank you.

Yes things have been a bit slow but there great, I’m really enjoying mission. I talked to the mission President a couple of days ago just kind randomly because my companion was seeing him. We had a really good talk about a lot of things, he is a good guy.  I was just asking him how I could make the best out of my mission for these past couple of months I have left. He gave me some good pointers, so things are going really well for me. My companion and I are having lots of fun, he’s a great guy also.

But I asked you guys a question last time, you guys always want me to send pictures but I wanted you guys to tell me what you want me to send, so just let me know. I also would like to see pictures from your trip dad… that would be cool. You can send me some pictures of girls camp mom, I think I love getting pictures just as much as you guys do.

But sorry I’m a bit short on time today so I’ll have to say goodbye. But love you guys and I’ll talk to you all next week.

 Love Justin

I have a great new companion

Hey mom and dad,

Good to hear from you guys, and yes… everything was going alright with my last companion. We were companions for just 1 transfer, he was not really my favorite companion, but we did not really have any major problems… it’s all good. My new companion is Elder Cushing, he is sweet we get along really well. We are very much alike so we click J He also plays the guitar so we have been jammin in the flat. He is from Mapleton Utah, and has been on his mission for about 5 months, so just a little less than me J I was getting a bit stressed for a bit there, just because our area is not doing to hot and me and my companion were not hitting it off to well, it makes a huge difference when you and your companion get along really well, even if the area is not doing well you still have a fun time, since we get along so well, things are going better.  As far as investigators go we have like literally two investigators that are kinda progressing. Yesterday we got a message from these two guys we were teaching saying that they were not comfortable with the Book of Mormon and would not read it but said we could come by and just talk about the bible, which really kinda sucks.  Our purpose is not to go to people and teach them about the bible. Then two of are other investigators Charity and Clair are ditching appointment's, not coming to church, and just basically falling of our radar. Besides that, we are working with a few less actives, only one of which is actually coming back now, Sister Masters.  I think I talked about her in one of my previous emails. She is awesome we see her like 3-4 times a week because she also feeds us like crazy. She is like my grandma on mission, I told her I had a sore throat at church and when we went to her house to visit her yesterday she had bought me a bag full of medicine and a bunch of stuff to help my throat. She said she knows she broke the Sabbath day but that the lord would understand that she had to help one of her missionaries.  She is coming back to church now and doing super well and now preparing to go to the temple, so that's really cool! The only investigators that are somewhat progressing is a girl named Isabelle who is from Zim and a nanny for some members, and then a guy named Gordan who is a really good guy. He has already finished the Book of Mormon and knows everything is true but the only thing holding him back is his job. His job is not allowing him to come to church. So that's my update on our investigators, but like I said it does not matter on how bad or good your area is, if you and your companion get along the area is going to be sweet and you will have fun no matter what. It was like with me and Elder Robinson in Nelspruit. A lot of missionaries hated that area but to this day it was my favorite area and was my hardest just because I had a sweet companion.

So I hope that was a good update on my life as of now. We just really need members help right now. We are trying to get referrals but not too much is happening. So if you have any ideas on how to get members to help us let me know. Sounds like things are going well at home.   I like the pictures you sent me, sorry I have not been sending very many, to be honest I have not taken any pictures since I last sent you guys those last photos. Tell me what you want pictures of and I’ll get it for you guys.  I really don't know what to take pictures of anymore, so just let me know. Sounds like you’re going to have a busy summer mom. And dad, that’s sweet that you’re going to go golfing more, I will have to join you when I get home. I think I have clubs, but I can’t remember. I think golfing is like the least popular sport here ha-ha, actually I take that back… I think it might be American football.  All people watch here is Soccer, Rugby, and Cricket. I have no idea how someone can sit down and watch a full game of cricket it is like the most boring sport in the world. But I guess I’ll talk to you guys next week… thanks for Nelsons number I’ll give him a call. Love you guys, take care.

Another transfer, a new companion

Hey mom and dad,

Good to hear from you guys, thanks for all the updates. Thanks mom for giving me the scoop on how your guy’s night went ha-ha sorry the movie was bad. Man dad… you’re still killing Magpies? I thought that battle was won years ago? Well it’s good to hear victory is now yours again. Does Oakley not chase them away; is she getting to old now or something?

Well transfers came and my companion is leaving :) too bad, so tomorrow I will go pick up my new companion. I’m super excited though because today we are going to go pick up Elder Van Heerdan and chill with him today. I don’t know if you remember but Elder van was my companion in Francistown. He has been one of my favorite comps and he is getting transferred from bots so he will be down today around 1 so it’s going to be sweet, I have not seen him for a long time. Besides that, there are really no other updates… sorry, I feel bad.  It kind of seems like the more and more my mission goes the less and less I have to talk about. It’s weird but when I first came out so many things were just so different to me and it was crazy and huge culture shock and now it’s just like, well this is my life. This is what I do every day. So I don’t know… hopefully I’ll have more news for you guys next week.

About Nelson… could you give me the phone number that he called you from?  Maybe I could try and give him a call just to see how things are going. You should give him a call soon because you never know when these people are going to get a new phone. It’s not like back in the states where you have the same phone for a year or 2 here it’s like people get new phones monthly or even weekly. Don’t ask me why but that’s just how it is here. But that’s cool you guys found our apartment, we are on the top floor, and it’s going to be hard to describe what one we are in, when you enter the gates we are the first building on the left.  But love you guys a lot! I’ll give you updates on my new companion next week talk to you guys soon.

Thanks for the call...

Hey mom and dad,
Ha-ha its fine that you called me last night… you scared me to death!  Right when I pick up the phone all I hear is, "Justin, are you okay??" I thought you had like a vision of something terrible happening to me. But I’m pretty sure the person you received a call from was Nelson, you should really try calling him back and letting me how it goes next Monday.  I wish somehow I could listen to the voice mail. I would be able to tell right off if it is Nelson.
So are address is Pine Ave 324, 2194, Randburg South Africa. That’s the best I could do, I hope your able to find it.  I was also thinking about it and I don't really want you guys worrying about coming down hear. It’s probably going to be way to expensive plus I honestly just want to come home as soon possible after my last transfer meeting and fly home with my group. I would rather come back in a little while when I’m no longer a missionary with you guys so we can also do some fun things. We could go to Capetown and Durban and just have a great time. That is if I can ever get the money to do that. But I don’t know… that's just what I think. I think it would be nice if I was just a normal person so we could have more fun.
Those pictures were amazing by the way they looked super cool. Thanks for sending them. Sounds like you guys had a crazy Sunday, I can’t believe you went to all those meetings; I would go out of my mind. Stake con was good, to be honest we were in the very back so we could not really hear so me and elder Bean, (good friend from my group) just started writing each other notes and then we ended up playing games and drawing pictures and before you knew it time was up! But the topic was about eternal families, I just wish I could have heard more. That’s crazy you guys get out of school soon, I feel like it was just summer for you guys. But it’s good talking to you guys and was nice hearing from you guys last night. Love you guys and talk to you soon.
